El Risco, Tinto 2023
The region of Calatayud was a major viticultural hub at the beginning of the 20th century. Today, only 3,000ha remain, but what is left, however, is a treasure chest of old vineyards. At El Risco, it’s not uncommon to find 80+ year old vines, which are able to withstand the warm and dry climate as well as its infamous strong northerly wind, and produce phenomenally good wines. Tinto 2023 is made from a blend of sustainably farmed Syrah and Garnacha, with around 20% whole bunch fermentation which puts loads of freshness into the wine. Pronounced notes of plum, raspberry and herbs jump out on the nose along with some spice and leather. Medium body with fine tannins and flavours of wild berries give way to a smooth spicy finish. A great wine to pair with lamb.
